Week 1: Introduction - My Life

Hello! My name is Chelsey Zerby! I am from Oklahoma near the Oklahoma City area. Naturally that means I am a die hard OKC Thunder fan. I am really missing basketball season at the moment. However, I am extremely excited for football!! I am in the Pride of Oklahoma, which is the University of Oklahoma's marching band. I am in the colorguard. In other words: I am one of the girls spinning flags during halftime and doing Big 12 kicks with the huge flags during pregame. I mention all that to say 1) I have been extremely busy and tired the last few weeks.. so please cheer really loud when we get onto the field to perform and 2) I get really great seats for the football games. Right now it is my dream to go to the Rose Bowl and this year it is a possibility! I am definitely praying our team will get us there!

The Pride of Oklahoma marching to the stadium on a rainy game day.

This summer I was extremely boring. I worked and took a summer class. I work as an office assistant at Vision Therapy Associates. It's been a very good experience and I have learned SO much about how your eyes and your brain are supposed to work together and how a lot of people have issues with making them work as teammates. My summer class was Human Anatomy and Physiology part 2 at OCCC. I took anatomy at OU.. that was awful. So it was definitely easier at OCCC. I really enjoyed learning anatomy and physiology together instead of having them as two separate classes. However, I had class from 5:30- 11:00pm. Which was really awful. On a fun note for the summer, I got to do a lot of reading for me. I got really into everything John Green has ever written.

I am very glad to be back in Norman and am really excited for what this semester has to bring! Honestly, I am also really looking forward to this class. It isn’t anything like my other classes, but is still something I love!

  1. Hi Chelsey! I enjoyed reading your introduction! I also took a summer class this summer in June. It started the day after my birthday and for the next four weeks I would be doing nothing but writing. We had to write 3 two page papers every week (which always turned into 3 pages). So I was writing 9 pages a week and it was exhausting. Luckily it was over with time left to still enjoy the summer. I think it is great that you are in The Pride of Oklahoma. I always have wondered what it would be like to be a part of that. It seems like so much fun, and you get to go to all of the games! I usually only get to go to one, if that, every year. I am looking forward to having this class together!

  2. Hi Chelsey! I definitely see the advantages to being a basketball fan because basketball games are held indoors and not in the 100+ degree heat. Since you’re from Oklahoma, hopefully the heat doesn’t bother you as much as it does me! I think it’s pretty exciting that you’re a member of the Pride! I was in marching band in high school. I marched tenor saxophone. However, I could never have the dedication to do what you guys do on a college level!

  3. Hello Chelsey! I really enjoyed your introduction! I am currently taking anatomy here at OU. For the second time... It is pretty awful because of how hard it is but I do enjoy it. The human body is what I am most interested in so I would hope to like the class! I promise to cheer as loud as I can for the Pride and the color-guard when they go out on the field to perform!

  4. Oh wow, Chelsey, you are in the Pride... what a great weekend you are going to have!!!!! How exciting!!!!! And your job at Vision Therapy sounds fascinating. I had a big medical adventure this summer (a retinal tear which required getting my eye lasered!), and in the time I spent at the Eye Clinic at the hospital I saw so much amazing equipment... so of course I was so glad that the eye surgeon was able to take care of me, and I was also just so impressed at how hard they work to help people to keep their vision. Vision really is a miracle and I am personally very grateful to the optometrists and ophthalmologists who have made it possible for me to see since, without the miracle of vision correction, I would have spent my life basically blind, but instead I have almost 20/20 vision. I am grateful for that every morning when I get up and put on my glasses!

  5. Chelsey, that is so cool you are in the Pride!! I wish I would have read this prior to the game this weekend, and I certainly would have cheered for you! But I will keep it in mind for future reference! I am hoping for a trip to the Rose Bowl with you as well though. That would be so cool!!

I am also sorry you had to suffer through so much school this summer, but your summer job seemed to have left you with some cool new insight and knowledge. While I did not spend my summer in school so much, we did spend some of our summer similarly though in the sense that we got acquainted with John Green. I loved 'The Fault in Our Stars' and 'Finding Alaska'. Both were awesome books, but such sad outcomes.

  6. Hi Chelsey! That is awesome you are in the Pride! I know it was super hot while tailgating, so I can't even imagine how hot it was on the field but I'm sure it was still a blast!
Your summer class sounds brutal. 5:30-11pm?! I think I would rip out my fingernails haha, but at least now you're done with that class!

  7. As you've probably read from all the other comments, the fact that you're in the Pride is really cool! I so admire the dedication of everyone in the band; from what I've heard, practice must be brutal.
I also have heard great things about the vision treatment center where you worked. Is that something that you're interested in for the future? I have a friend who has wanted to be an ophthalmologist her entire life, and I always love hearing about the electrical impulses of the eye in conjunction with the nervous system. It must have been a great experience!

  8. How did you end up doing colorguard in the Pride? Had you done it in high school? The reason I ask is that I was in my high school marching band, but I played saxophone rather than did guard. As someone who came from Owasso, which has a pretty competitive music program, I can attest to how tired you must be every week. They really do keep you all busy!

  9. Hi Chelsey. I think it is so awesome that you are a Oklahoman (I think that’s the correct term, don’t mean to sound offensive) to the core. The fact that you are in the pride of Oklahoma is also cool. I noticed that a lot of people here are very much involved in out of school groups or organizations. Good for you. I look forward to reading more of your writing and good luck.

  10. Wow, it sounds like you live a very busy life! I enjoy to always be doing something too so I understand how you feel. That sounds really cool that you are in the color guard, how often do you guys have to practice? I took some summer classes too so I know how you feel they are not fun at all! Hope your semester is going great so far!

  11. Hi Chelsey! It’s so awesome that you are a part of the Pride! I actually did color guard when I was in elementary school, but was obviously far less talented than you are! I am an absolute die-hard OU football fan, so I am always at the home games yelling very loudly. Anyways, good luck with everything this semester, and I hope you get to go to the Rose Bowl this year!

  12. Hey Chelsey! It's wonderful that you are so involved here at OU by being a part of something as important and fun as the Pride! I was in band in high school and really thought about joining the Pride here, but eventually decided that I wanted to seek out new opportunities! Anyways, I'm sorry that you had such a negative experience with anatomy here. I was a TA for the class for a year and a half and absolutely loved the course. Cindy and Chanda definitely were the ones that made it so enjoyable though! Good luck with getting into the HES program (which is what I am currently in and love!) and with going to the Rose Bowl, which I'm sure we will definitely get to do this year!

  13. Chelsey,

I know a few people who are in Pride. I love watching you guys perform, so I hope you think we yell hard enough! Haha. I really like the background you chose for your blog. I hope you still like this class and have had a little more time for yourself instead of being so busy! Can't wait to read some of your stories!

  14. Hi Chelsey, nice to meet you! It sounds like so much fun to be on the colorguard! I hope you get to go to the Rose Bowl like you've been dreaming of. I read The Fault In Our Stars over the summer and loved it. You would be a good person to ask which John Green book to read next. Did you love the movie? I thought they did a fantastic job of staying true to the book, especially because they used so much of the original dialogue. I hope you're having a great semester!

  15. Hi Chelsey!

It’s awesome to get to meet someone who is from this area! I think that it’s awesome that you’re in the Pride! I did band for six years before I decided to call quits after graduating high school. I definitely miss marching season, but I cannot imagine how busy you were over the summer and even now!! Marching in high school was intense at times, and I can only imagine how it is at the collegiate level. Since I’ve come across your blog so late in the semester, I hope you’re enjoying this course and it lived up to your expectations! Have a great rest of the semester!

  16. Hey Chelsey, by now I am sure that you have heard the news about KD....Like you I am a huge OKC Thunder fan. I am definitely upset that we are going to be without KD for six to eight weeks. I think it will be interesting seeing Russel Westbrook "unchained." He will probably be putting up forty shots per game. Some of my friends have told me horror stories about taking anatomy at OU. I have to say that I would never be able to retain the amount of information that anatomy requires you to learn. I hope the rest of your semester goes well!

  17. Hey Chelsey, Thats so cool that your in the colorgaurd! How do you like traveling to away games? I bet it can get tiring, but fun at the same time. I saw that you also took a class from 5:30PM-11:00PM. That is crazy! Was it for the whole semester? Also did you hear the bad news about Kevin Durant? He needs surgery and could miss 6-8 weeks.

  18. Chelsey,
Too bad about Kevin Durant being out for a while. I like the Thunder a lot, but my wife is from San Antonio, so I have a preference for the Spurs. I'm sad that this season for OU hasn't gone quite how we all hope for, but hopefully we will still finish strong.
That class you took over the summer sounds exhausting. I could not stand to be in a lecture for that long! I hope you did not have to do it often.

  19. It's nice to meet you Chelsey. I can definitely relate to your experience with Human Anatomy at OU. I took the class as well and needless to say it was a rough semester. I think it's awesome that you are apart of the color guard team for the Pride of Oklahoma. It's always fun to see you all perform during half time, it makes the football games a lot of fun! Hope you are still having a great semester! I'll be sure to cheer at our next home game!

  20. Nice to meet you Chelsey!

Sorry to hear that your summer was boring, mine wasn't to exciting either! It definitely seems that as I get older and busier, my summers become shorter and less adventure filled. As a pre-med science major, I definitely understand the pain and suffering that physiology and anatomy can bring. Best of luck for the rest of your classes!

  21. Nice to meet you Chelsey! It is awesome that you are in the Pride. I bet you’re excited for the upcoming changes huh? I am jealous of the amazing seats I bet you do get at the games. I’m sure working with the Vision Therapy Associates taught you a lot. I am taking anatomy next semester at OU… Cross your fingers for me. Would you suggest human anatomy and physio at OCCC over the classes here at OU? I need to do both!

  22. Hi Chelsey,
I feel your pain with Human Anatomy and Physiology, I took Phys here over the summer and I am in the process of retaking Anatomy as well, those are some tough courses. That's cool how your in the Pride as well; my roommate was in it for a couple years but got out of it because he didn't like the new director. What did you think about the director change? Good luck on the rest of your semester.

  23. Hi Chelsey! I bet being on the colorguard is so much fun! Being able to perform on the football field in front of so many people must be such an awesome experience. I hope you have enjoyed your semester. And hopefully when we get all of our players back you will enjoy watching our Thunder kick butt!

  24. I can so relate to you on the rigor of taking Anatomy at OU. I studied more than ever for that class and in the end it all payed off and I felt so accomplished. I hated that class as it was happening, but appreciate it more than any of my other classes now. I think it is so cool you worked at a Vision center this summer. I took physics over the summer and in physics 2 we learned about lenses and how the eye works at different angles and how corrective lenses, such as glasses and contacts, work to fix any impairments in vision. I think its cool you want to go to the Rose Bowl and perform, and hopefully our team can take you there, but it is looking pretty dismal for them this year.

  25. Man, I feel for you. I work in the Athletic Ticket Office and game days are just HARD. Worse for you guys though, you’re out way earlier than us and it’s been nothing but 11am games…. ugh, I’m in awe of your dedication. Also, I’m sorry about the Rose Bowl. Not very likely we’re going this year. The team just choked. But hey, maybe next year!

  26. Hi Chelsey! I am really glad that I got to stop by your blog before the semester ended! It is so cool that you are apart of the Pride of Oklahoma! I always see people wearing the awesome jackets! If only I could play an instrument or do color guard. I haven’t actually taken Anatomy or Physiology yet, but I am supposed to next year and I am a bit scared! I know a lot of friends who have taken it and struggled with it, but I am being optimistic. Anyway, good luck with finals and the rest of your semester!
